French conductor Louis Langrée has just been named the 13th music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2013-14 season.

Langrée succeeds Paavo Järvi, who began his tenure 2001 and ended it in May 2011. Järvi became music director of the Orchestre de Paris in September 2010.

Langrée, 51, was born in Mulhouse,  in France’s Alsatian region. He is currently music director of the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center in New York and he was recently appointed chief conductor of the Camerata Salzburg. He made his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut conducting “Iphigénie en Tauride” in 2006, and he has conducted at other major world houses including the Metropolitan Opera.

Here is Langrée conducting Beethoven’s Fifth, complete, with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on YouTube.

Previous music directors of the Cincinnati Symphony, which was founded in 1893, include some legendary names such as Leopold Stokowski, Eugène Ysaÿe, Fritz Reiner and Eugene Goossens.  Prior to Jarvi’s 10 year tenure, the CSO was led by Jesús López-Cobos.

  • Glen A. Gill says:

Other conductors of that “legendary” status are: Max Rudolf and Thomas Schippers.

Once again, the CSO is being used as a training-ground for conductors of limited status. Sad.
